Welcome to ESTONIA

Information about ESTONIA Nestling in the farthest corner of The Baltic Sea, Estonia has long taken advantage of its proximity to several major capital cities and this has enabled it to develop rapidly and confidently since independence was gained in 1994. Even so, its modernity has not diminished its enthusiasm for celebrating its strong cultural heritage. The oldest Estonian song type goes back to the first millennium BC. Two of Estonia's major festivals only come around every few years, but they are of exceptional quality. Tallinn's July Baltika Folk Festival is a week of music, dance, exhibitions and parades focusing on Baltic and other folk traditions. The All-Estonian Song Festival, which climaxes with a choir of up to 30,000 people singing traditional Estonian songs on a vast open-air stage to an audience of 100,000, is held every five years. In few places in Europe does the aura of the 14th and 15th centuries survive intact the way it does in Tallinn's Old Town, despite the changes going on in the rest of the country. Estonia's capital is so modern it's been dubbed 'a suburb of Helsinki'. Food and drink are as you might expect in this part of the world, with a unique Estonian twist. No one quite knows what the syrupy Vana Tallinn liqueur is made from. It's sickly sweet, very strong and an essential part of any Estonian table. At Christmas time, sausages are prepared from fresh blood and wrapped in pig's intestine. Blood sausages (verevorst) and blood pancakes (vere pannkoogid) are served in most traditional Estonian restaurants. The landscape is mainly wetland and bogs and offshore lie more than 1,500 islands, but Estonia's largest national park is an interesting mix of coastal bluffs, dense forest, 18th-century manor houses, and numerous lakes, rivers and waterfalls. The flora and fauna is a source of great pride and is heavily protected by law, and this lends itself to the preservation of a striking variety of wildlife, including the European flying squirrel. Estonia has fared better than most Baltic states since gaining independence, despite being the smallest. They have approached the process of change in a measured way, and can boast of a healthy level of stability.
